Wilkins is a star on the rise

Reggie Wilkins does it all for the Crest Chargers. The 5-10, 170 pound Shelby (NC) athlete played QB for the Chargers this past season but played DB, WR, and QB his sophomore year. Wilkins is a class of 2010 prospect that is being recruited as an athlete and currently has one ACC offer. As his film starts to get out, you can bet that his stock is going to rise.
“NC State is my only offer right now,” Wilkins said. “All of the schools really stick out right now. I’ve only visited three schools so far. I have visited North Carolina, Clemson, and NC State. The North Carolina was the best visit. There’s something about North Carolina that I really like.”
While North Carolina has already made a big impression on Wilkins, because of their climate the southern schools seem to already have an early advantage.
“I like Florida’s offense and would like to play in warm weather,” he said. “I like a lot of southern schools like Georgia, and Alabama. I don’t like the cold weather.”
Crest High School has a connection with the University of Florida. In 2006, the Gators signed LB Brandon Spikes and he’s arguably the most talented player on Florida’s defense. Despite the connection, Spikes won’t play a factor in the decision of Wilkins.
“I never have met Brandon, but I’ve always kind of liked Florida,” he said. “I like the way they play.”
At the Charlotte Nike Combine recently, Wilkins ran a 4.64. Many prospects in attendance at the Charlotte combine ran 40 times that they were not accustomed to. Wilkins was one of those prospects, which is no surprise since he is often described as a “blazer”.
“What we were running on was slippery and I ran it twice,” Wilkins said. “I slipped both times and that was the worst forty time of my entire life; I’m usually in the low 4.4’s.”
With the spring rapidly approaching, many of the nation’s top prospects will unofficially visit a number of campuses. Wilkins is no exception as he’s already been invited by many of the top programs in the SEC and ACC.
“I would like to commit before the season starts,” he said. “I’m going to go to some spring practices and games. The schools that have invited me to come this spring are Duke, North Carolina, NC State, Clemson, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt.”
Wilkins is sure to have more destinations this spring as well as the summer. Each visit will not only give him a unique opportunity to see the campuses and watch the football team at work, but also look for the things that are truly important to him.
“I would like to find a school that has a good graduation rate for their athletes,” said Wilkins. “I also want to major in Criminal Justice, so I want to find a school with a good Criminal Justice program.”
