Nathan Dorton is a 5-9, 155 pound receiver that finished last season with 13 catches for 256 yards and five touchdowns. The Irmo (SC) native runs a 4.63 40 time and reminds many of current NFL wide receiver Wes Welker.
“I never really had a clear cut favorite college team growing up,” Dorton said. “I kind of just followed different players. As far as the NFL goes, I’m a die hard Oakland Raiders fan and I try to model my game after Wes Welker from the Patriots. People have said that our playing style and running styles are similar.”
Dorton has been receiving interest from a number of schools, but currently has a top three with one school above the rest.
“I’ve been getting interest from NC State, Furman, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt, Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb, William and Mary, Presbyterian, North Carolina, and Liberty,” he said. “NC State, Furman, and Virginia Tech are recruiting me the hardest. NC State right now is my number one, Furman is two, and Virginia Tech is three. I really like the coach at NC State that is recruiting me; his name is Jim Bridge. He seems like a really nice guy and he likes kids that work hard, play hard, and don’t take any plays off. That’s one thing that I try to do the most.”
Irmo High School is home to arguably the best running back in South Carolina in 2010 prospect Mustafa Greene. Last season Irmo concentrated a lot on the running game but this spring they have started to open it up in the passing game.
“This spring we’ve been throwing the ball more than year’s past,” he said. “Mustafa (Greene) is definitely in the game plan to and we’re going to be more balanced.”
So far, Dorton has only taken one visit, but this summer he plans on attending a number of camps.
“I visited Furman last season for their first game against Presbyterian,” Dorton said. “That is the only visit that I have taken so far. The visit went good and I really like their campus. I’ve been up there several times to their camps and it’s a top notch school. I’m going to several camps this summer at Furman, NC State, Virginia Tech, Appalachian State, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, possibly William and Mary, North Carolina, and Liberty.”
Dorton is due for a busy summer, but he’s also not in a big rush to make his college decision. With every school that he checks out, he wants to make sure that he is able to get early playing time and that the wide receiver is a key part of the offense.
“I’m looking for a school that definitely throws the ball,” he said. “Size of the school isn’t too big of an issue to me as long as they throw the ball. School prestige isn’t that big of an issue, it all comes down to having an opportunity to play. I want to play in a spread or pro style passing type of offense. I haven’t really thought about it too much, but I’ll probably make my decision close to Signing Day”
