Oku has a top six

The talented running back from Carl Albert High School in Oklahoma now has offers from Michigan, Illinois, Kansas, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Florida State, Minnesota, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Colorado, Tennessee, and Auburn. He also has a current top six with one Big 12 school almost making the list.
“I have a top six right now with schools that I want to deal with,” Oku said. “Oklahoma State is kind of right there because they’ve been there all along but they aren’t in the top six. The top six schools are Florida State, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio State, Tennessee, and USC. The only two current teams that I am waiting on offers from are Ohio State and USC. When I get those offers from them, more than likely I will shut down my recruiting. I want to make this less stressful on myself and my mom at the same time. Tennessee is a school that I am really liking right now. My friend Gerald Jones goes there and tells me all about everything that’s going on there. That gives them a leg up over the other schools because I don’t have somebody who can tell me everything that’s going on at USC or the other schools.”
Growing up, David Oku was a big Florida State Seminoles fan. While Florida State remains in the hunt for Oku, a big rival of the Seminoles stood a good chance early in the process but now that’s no longer the case.
“Florida State is just me and I have liked them for a long time,” he said. “I was considering Florida heavily when Coach Drayton was there, but now he’s at Tennessee. Florida isn’t a running back school; it’s more of a wide receiver thing. The running back gets the ball but you want to go to a school where the running back gets the ball. They get the ball, but not that much at Florida, so that’s why I’m not considering them right now.”
Oku hasn’t taken any visits so far, but plans to make his visits when he can narrow down his schools to five. He’s also focusing on taking his ACT and getting the score that he needs to enroll early.
“I haven’t taken any visits,” he said. “That’s why I have a top six and then I want to cut one school. That way I can deal with five schools while football season is going on. If I can cut one school this summer and deal with the other five that would make me really happy. If I could get it down to four, that would be even better. If I can make a good score on this ACT, I plan on being a December grad. The quicker I can get out of the house, the quicker I can help my family. If I am a December grad, I will probably decide in November or December. If I am not a December grad, I will probably decide in January.”
Recently ESPN and the Under Armour game representatives announced their preliminary rosters for the All-American game next January. There are still some roster slots available and Oku hopes to be one of the names that are added to the list.
“I want to do the Under Armour game,” Oku said. “There’s nothing against the Army game, but I just want to go to the Under Armour game. I would really love to play in that game and the game is so underrated. I want to meet a bunch of players and make it a big game.”
